The M word

The Oxford dictionary definition of Menopause is : The period during which a woman’s menstrual cycle ceases, normally at an age of 45-50" If only it were that simple. In reality it can be a very difficult time for women and for some it starts as early as in their 30’s, for some late in their 50’s and often it drags on for years of hot flushes, night sweats, weight gain, mental confusion, irritability and much more.

Some women experience little in the way of problems during menopause, but for many it is disorienting, learning to cope with brain fog, relationship strain, work/ life balance as well as the inevitable fear of having lost their youth. Coaching can help to find equilibrium and coping strategies to get through this very difficult time.

Menopause is a natural and inevitable life transition for women. ( and some transgender) and is the result of a series hormonal changes which affect people cognitively, physically and emotionally. Symptoms of menopause are generally experienced in the age 40 years plus and the many symptoms during this ten years of transition impact lives in different ways. Some symptoms are easy to manage whilst others can be quite severe enough have a daily impact on wellbeing and health . Most women find menopause challenging and feel un-prepared and poorly informed for the transition .

Common symptoms are hot flushes, night sweats, brain fog, palpitations, irregular periods, anxiety, depression and mood swings, headaches, dry eyes, nausea, lack of sleep, aching joints, fatigue, loss of libido and discomfort during intercourse. The effect of menopause varies between women and a number of factors such as genetics, physical and mental health, diet and lifestyle can affect the symptoms as well as the social and cultural attitudes shown to those experiencing menopause.

There are many support groups, websites, self-help books out there for becoming better informed and to feel understood. Sometimes though, you just need to talk to someone about it, to feel understood and to be reassured that what you are experiencing is normal, no matter how unpleasant and to get help with the frustrating and somehow disorienting effects of Menopause.
